Dr Federica Tamburini is a researcher in the group of Plant Nutrition at the Institute of Agricultural Sciences at ETH Zurich (Switzerland), where she manages the stable isotope facility. The group uses the vario PYRO cube elemental analyzer for investigating the phosphorous cycle in soil/plant environments by analysing 18O in phosphate materials. 18O analysis of phosphate has previously been considered a demanding analysis but by using the vario PYRO cube, Dr Tamburini and colleagues now measure these sample types routinely.
Dr Peter Wynn is a Senior Lecturer at Lancaster University, and is based within the Lancaster Environment Centre (LEC). He is a Stable Isotope Geochemist researching in the fields of palaeoclimate reconstruction and glaciology. The department's particular specialty is analyzing sulfur isotopes and undertaking high temperature oxygen pyrolysis and the team has established techniques to extract sulfur isotopic signals from palaeo records, including speleothems, tree rings and carbonate rocks. Using the vario PYRO cube elemental analyzer, the group are able to determine the 34S and the 18O isotopic ratio of sulfate materials to help answer questions about deep geology and pollution migration.
